What is CoQ10?

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a substance found naturally in your body and present in small amounts in some foods. It plays two important roles in your health: in energy production and antioxidant activity. Understanding both is what lets you work out the best CoQ10 supplement for fertility, since dose and form matter more than brand.

CoQ10 is involved in the cellular processes that convert food into energy. It’s found in high concentrations in your organs with high energy demands, like your heart, liver, and kidneys. Eggs and sperm sit in that same category, which is why the fertility research focuses here.

CoQ10 acts as an antioxidant, protecting your cells from damage caused by harmful molecules called free radicals. Free radicals contribute to aging and various health problems, and antioxidants help neutralize them.

Benefits of CoQ10

For men:

  • CoQ10 may improve sperm quality, including sperm count, motility, and morphology.
  • A 2015 study of 60 men demonstrated improvements in sperm count and motility after CoQ10 supplementation. Sperm count improved by 53%, and total sperm motility increased by 26%.
  • Another study showed that CoQ10 supplementation combined with other antioxidants improved sperm parameters in infertile men with idiopathic oligospermia (low sperm count).

For women:

  • CoQ10 may improve egg quality by protecting eggs from oxidative stress.
  • One study showed that women who received CoQ10 supplements for 60 days or longer had improved egg quality and higher fertilization rates.
  • Another study found that CoQ10 supplementation improved oocyte maturation rate and decreased the percentage of oocyte aneuploidy (abnormal chromosome number) in women aged 38–46 years.

Difference Between Ubiquinol and Ubiquinone

CoQ10 for fertility is sold in two main forms – ubiquinol and ubiquinone. The main difference between ubiquinol and ubiquinone is that ubiquinol is the oxidized form of CoQ10.

Is That A Problem?

Not really. CoQ10 molecules in your body continuously transform from the ubiquinol form to the ubiquinone form, and vice versa. However, the urban legend is that ubiquinol is better than ubiquinone.

Ubiquinol Is Better Than Ubiquinone?

There is a running hypothesis amongst researchers that ubiquinol is more “bioavailable” than ubiquinone. In other words, it is more easy for the body to absorb and use.

One study that supports this hypothesis is a 2018 study of older men with better outcomes using ubiquinol than ubiquinone.

Another group of researchers responded in 2020 with a study that concluded that there is no significant difference in bioavailability when comparing ubiquinol vs ubiquinone.

CoQ10 Softgels Better Than Capsules?

A 2019 study tested 7 different CoQ10 supplement suppliers and found that soft-gel capsules were the most effective – it did not matter whether they contained ubiquinone or ubiquinol.

The Case For Ubiquinone

The ubiquinone form of CoQ10 is the form that is used in most of the research on CoQ10. This means that the ubiquinone form is responsible for all the positive fertility and cardiovascular outcomes.

The other good thing about ubiquinone is that it is more stable than the ubiquinol form of CoQ10. This is also why it is less expensive and hence the form that is used in most of the research done on CoQ10.

100mg CoQ10: Four Brands Compared

1. NOW Foods CoQ10 100mg

NOW is the brand most people already know, and the 100mg is the one they reach for. It’s also the entry where you most need to check what’s in the bottle, because NOW sells two different 100mg products and the difference matters.

The veggie capsule version, sold in 30, 90 and 180 counts, contains CoQ10 plus hawthorn berry. Hawthorn is a cardiovascular herb with a long history of traditional use, and NOW includes it deliberately — this is a heart-health formula. It is not a neutral filler. NOW’s own labelling advises consulting a practitioner before use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking blood pressure medication or blood thinners. If you’re supplementing to conceive, you’re in at least the first of those categories by intention.

The softgel version, sold in 150 and 200 counts, is plain CoQ10 with no added herb. It’s gelatin, so not vegetarian, but it’s the one to buy if you want CoQ10 and only CoQ10 from NOW at this strength.

Both are ubiquinone in the all-trans form produced by fermentation, which is NOW’s standard across the range and the form most of the research used.

NOW Foods CoQ10 100mg bottle

NOW Foods CoQ10 100mg

  • Pros: Widely stocked and easy to find, established brand, ubiquinone in the researched form, choice of vegetarian capsule or softgel.
  • Cons: The veggie capsule contains hawthorn berry, which carries pregnancy and medication cautions and is easy to buy by accident. The plain version is gelatin, so you can’t have both vegetarian and additive-free at this strength. Poor value per milligram compared with everything above 100mg on this list.
  • Price: S$41.38 (≈US$32.66); S$0.28 per count

2. Jarrow Formulas CoQ10 100mg

Jarrow Formulas CoQ10 100mg is a trusted option for fertility support, offered by a well-respected brand. Each serving contains 100mg of ubiquinone CoQ10 in softgel form, ensuring convenience and ease of consumption. While Jarrow may be priced slightly higher than some alternatives, it is third-party tested, which provides assurance of quality and effectiveness.

Despite the potential for lower absorption compared to ubiquinol, its reputation for reliability makes it a preferred choice for those prioritizing brand trust in their fertility journey.

jarrow coq10 singapore

Jarrow Formulas CoQ10 100mg

  • Pros: Vegan capsule, plain ubiquinone, minimal excipients, well-established brand.
  • Cons: Most expensive per mg on this list. Dry powder in a capsule with no delivery system, so absorption is likely lower than the softgels further down.
  • Price: S$20.37 (≈US$16.08) for 60 caps

3. Doctor’s Best CoQ10 100mg

This is where it gets interesting. Most people do not compare the relative prices of Now Food vs other brands. Well, Doctor’s Best is quite a reputable brand, and those who shop on iherbs or amazon know what I am saying.

Doctor’s Best CoQ10 100mg uses the ubiquinone form and includes BioPerine, which helps improve absorption, making it a suitable and beginner-friendly option. It is available in softgel or veggie capsule form.

I would already pay more for the inclusion of Bioperine, but look a the price! It is even cheaper than Now Food or Jarrow’s.

Doctor's Best CoQ10 100mg bottle

Doctor’s Best CoQ10 100mg

  • Pros: Cheaper per mg than Jarrow, choice of softgel or veggie capsule, BioPerine may improve absorption.
  • Cons: Piperine can affect the metabolism of other medications, so it’s not the right pick if you’re on prescriptions. Check which format you’re ordering —the softgel is not vegan.
  • Price: S$66.49 (≈US$52.47); S$0.18 per count

4. Puritan's Pride CoQ10 100mg

Puritan’s Pride CoQ10 100mg offers an affordable option for individuals seeking fertility support. With each serving containing 100mg of ubiquinone CoQ10, it provides a reliable dosage to promote reproductive health.

It is available in softgel and rapid-release softgel form. They sell it in 60, 120 or 240 softgels.

This is the fourth 100mg CoQ10 product I am sharing, and if it is not already clear, the price is the lowest so far, and it is in softgel form (which I like using)!

I am indifferent to whether it carries ubiquinone or ubiquinol.

Puritan's Pride CoQ10 100mg bottle

Puritan’s Pride CoQ10 100mg

  • Pros: Cheapest 100mg here, softgel format, bulk sizes bring the per-mg cost down further.
  • Cons: Gelatin, so not vegetarian. At 100mg you’re still swallowing several a day to reach a meaningful dose.
  • Price: S$22.80 (≈US$17.99) for 60 caps

The Only 120mg Softgel Product Out There

5. Swanson CoQ10 120mg

The odd strength on this list, and it makes a point I want you to notice.

Swanson’s 120mg softgel costs less per bottle than several of the 100mg products above it, while containing 20% more CoQ10 per capsule. That works out to about S$0.27 per 100mg — cheaper than every 100mg product we’ve looked at.

This is the moment the per-milligram column starts mattering more than the sticker price. From here on, going up in strength gets you more CoQ10 for less money, and the only reason not to is if you struggle to swallow larger capsules or want finer control over your dose.

Two Brands Selling 300mg CoQ10

8. Kirkland Signature Maximum Potency CoQ10 300 mg

The next two supplements are in the 300mg range.

I recommend Kirkland Maximum Potency CoQ10 300mg mostly because you get a decent dose in one pill, and also because I have several patients who come in already using it.

I myself use a multiple of 100mg softgels (not this brand) as they are easier to swallow, but there are people who want to get the most from each pill they swallow. For this, Kirkland is an excellent choice.

As for the second brand Swiss Bioenergetics, it is also 300mg but contains vitamin B1 (thiamine) which purportedly enhances absorption. While I would recommend Kirkland instead, it is good to show you, the reader what varieties there are out there on the internet.

Kirkland Signature Maximum Potency CoQ10 300 mg

9. Swiss Bioenergetics CoQ10 300mg

Is It Crazy to Use 1000mg CoQ10?

10. Liposomal CoQ10 1000mg

Some fertility patients have been on CoQ10 for a long time, tolerate it well, and start wondering whether more would do more. If that’s you, and you’re considering anything above 600mg a day, here’s the answer.

Higher-doses, like Liposomal CoQ10 1000mg are not necessary. From our research on CoQ10 doses, the maximum effective dose is 2400mg, doses above 2000mg are less for fertility and more for brain function.

Liposomal CoQ10 1000mg bottle

Liposomal CoQ10 1000mg

  • Pros: Ubiquinol form, liposomal delivery may improve absorption, vegan. Liposomal vehicle is made from sunflower lecithin, which is helpful for high cholesterol.
  • Cons: Potential for allergic reactions to soy.

Best CoQ10 for Male Fertility

11. Jarrow Formulas Ubiquinol QH-Absorb 200mg

For men, fertility supplements can feel like a women’s aisle problem — but male factor is involved in roughly half of infertility cases, and CoQ10 has data on both sides. The catch: the supermarket bottle is usually ubiquinone at 30mg, a fraction of what the studies used.

Sperm mitochondria sit in the midpiece and power the tail. Ubiquinol is the active, pre-converted form, absorbing about twice as well as ubiquinone. Jarrow’s QH-absorb raises CoQ10 levels 222% at 100mg/day and 777% at 300mg/day over baseline.

One softgel a day (200mg of ubiquinol) is roughly equivalent to 400mg of ubiquinone, the dose that beat 200mg for sperm concentration and motility (Alahmar, 2019). Give it three months — roughly how long sperm take to develop.

coq10 for sperm - Jarrow Formulas Ubiquinol QH-Absorb 200mg

Jarrow Formulas Ubiquinol QH-Absorb 200mg

  • Pros: Kaneka ubiquinol, the branded raw material behind most of the published sperm motility research. Proliposome lipid delivery in an MCT base, so absorption doesn’t hinge on eating a fatty meal. One softgel a day covers the studied male range.
  • Cons: Bovine gelatin softgel, so not vegan or halal. Large softgels. Pricier per milligram than ubiquinone.
  • Price: US$78.93 (≈S$100.01) for 60 softgels

12. Doctor's Best High Absorption CoQ10 400mg with BioPerine

Three to six months at 400mg a day is the realistic commitment if you’re chasing better motility, and that’s where cost starts to bite. This is the ubiquinone option for men who want the full studied dose without the ubiquinol premium.

You get 400mg in a single capsule with 5mg BioPerine black pepper extract to help uptake. Ubiquinone absorbs less efficiently per milligram, but most of the earlier male fertility trials — including the 2013 study using 200mg daily in men with low count and poor motility — ran on high-dose ubiquinone and still moved sperm parameters over three to six months. One capsule with dinner and you’re done for the day.

Doctor’s Best High Absorption CoQ10 400mg with BioPerine

  • Pros: USP Verified and naturally fermented, which matters in a category where label accuracy is inconsistent. Single capsule hits 400mg, so no doubling up and no forgetting the second dose. Vegan, non-GMO, gluten free, soy free.
  • Cons: Ubiquinone rather than ubiquinol, so lower bioavailability milligram for milligram. Piperine can interact with some medications, so check first if you’re on blood thinners or anything with a narrow therapeutic window.
  • Price: US$32.99 (≈S$41.80) for 60 veggie caps

Best CoQ10 for Women Over 40

13. NOW Foods Ubiquinol Extra Strength 200mg

Trying again after 40 is hard enough without getting the supplement wrong. The usual mistake with CoQ10 is the dose — the egg quality studies used far more than the 100mg pharmacy bottles, which would mean six softgels a day.

Eggs are the most mitochondria-dense cells in the body, and those mitochondria power chromosome separation as the egg matures. That machinery slows with age, which is why quality, not just numbers, drives falling success rates after 40. In an RCT of 169 women under 35 with poor ovarian reserve, 600mg daily improved ovarian response and embryo quality (Xu et al., 2018). No trial has tested that dose specifically after 40; ubiquinol makes more sense here because the ability to convert ubiquinone falls with age.

Ubiquinol absorbs about twice as well as ubiquinone, so 200–300mg covers the 400–600mg range: one softgel a day, or two if your clinician wants the top of it. Start three months before an IVF cycle — roughly how long a follicle takes to mature.

coq10 for women over 40 - NOW Foods Ubiquinol Extra Strength 200mg

NOW Foods Ubiquinol Extra Strength 200mg

  • Pros: Kaneka Ubiquinol, the branded ingredient used in most published research, suspended in MCT oil for better intestinal absorption. Free of gluten, dairy, soy, egg, fish and shellfish, which is unusually clean for this category.
  • Cons: Bovine gelatin softgel, so not vegan or halal. At one or two a day, a 60-count bottle lasts one to two months.
  • Price: S$66.07 (≈US$52.14); S$1.10 per count

14. Doctor's Best Ubiquinol with Kaneka 200mg

If your doctor has you on ubiquinol for a full IVF prep cycle, you’re looking at three to six months of continuous supply. At that point the deciding factor isn’t the formula, it’s whether you can afford to stay on it. The 120-count bottle is the reason this one is here.

Same 200mg of Kaneka ubiquinol per softgel, this time carried in extra virgin olive oil and MCT. CoQ10 is fat-soluble and absorbs poorly on an empty stomach, so the oil base matters more than the marketing suggests — take it with your largest meal of the day. At 400mg daily a single bottle covers two months, which cuts both the cost per milligram and the number of reorders across a prep cycle.

coq10 for women over 40 -Doctor's Best Ubiquinol with Kaneka 200mg

Doctor’s Best Ubiquinol with Kaneka 200mg

  • Pros: Best cost per milligram of the ubiquinol options here, which matters over a three to six month run. Extra virgin olive oil base supports absorption. Rosemary extract included as a natural antioxidant to protect the ubiquinol from oxidising in the softgel.
  • Cons: Bovine gelatin, again not vegan or halal. Large bottle is a commitment if you haven’t confirmed you tolerate it — some women get mild nausea or loose stools at higher doses, which usually settles if you split the dose across meals.
  • Price: US$34.99 (≈S$44.34) for 30 softgels

Recommended Dosage to Take CoQ10 for Fertility

Men: 200–400mg daily. A 2019 trial found 400mg outperformed 200mg for sperm concentration and motility over three months.

Women: 400–600mg daily. The RCT that improved ovarian response and embryo quality in younger women (under 35) with poor ovarian reserve used 600mg (Xu et al., 2018).

Both ranges are for ubiquinone, the standard form. Ubiquinol absorbs about twice as well, so halve them if you buy ubiquinol: 200–300mg for women, 100–200mg for men.

Anything below 200mg is a general wellness dose rather than a fertility one, which is why the 100mg bottles most people start with rarely do much.

Two things that matter as much as the number. Take it with a meal containing fat — CoQ10 is fat-soluble and absorption drops sharply on an empty stomach. And split anything above 300mg across two or three doses rather than taking it all at once.

Talk to your doctor before starting, particularly if you’re on blood thinners or thyroid medication, or if you’re mid-IVF protocol.

Side Effects of CoQ10

While CoQ10 is generally considered safe, it’s important to be aware of potential side effects, especially when considering its use for fertility. Here’s a breakdown of potential side effects related to CoQ10:

Common Side Effects:

  • Mild digestive issues: These are the most common side effects, such as nausea, diarrhea, and stomach upset. They are usually mild and temporary, especially when starting with lower doses.
  • Headaches: Some individuals may experience headaches, although this is less common.

Less Common Side Effects:

  • Sleep disturbances: Taking CoQ10 close to bedtime might disrupt sleep in some people.
  • Skin reactions: Rare cases of allergic reactions or skin rashes have been reported.
  • Muscle pain: This is uncommon but may occur in individuals with specific medical conditions.

Potential Interactions:

  • Blood thinners: CoQ10 may interact with blood thinners, potentially increasing bleeding risk. Consult your doctor before combining them.
  • Thyroid medications: CoQ10 may interfere with some thyroid medications. Discuss with your doctor if you take both.

Conclusion: Is CoQ10 Good for Fertility?

As we wrap up our look into CoQ10 supplements for fertility, it’s clear they offer hope for those seeking to start a family. By improving sperm and egg quality, CoQ10 holds promise for individuals facing infertility challenges.

Armed with knowledge about dosages and benefits, you now know that CoQ10 at 100mg a day is too little, and the dosages included in Fertility supplements out there like Profertil are conservative at best.

If you are a couple seeking to use CoQ10 supplementation to make a significant difference to your chances of conceiving, consider starting at least at 400mg (for men) and 400–600mg  (for women) of CoQ10 a day. You can also read this page to learn about how supplementation can go beyond 1000mg in the treatment of other conditions.

FAQ About CoQ10 for Fertility

How much CoQ10 for fertility?

Men 200–400mg daily, women 400–600mg, as ubiquinone. Halve it if you buy ubiquinol. Take it with a fatty meal — absorption drops sharply on an empty stomach. Below 200mg is a wellness dose, not a fertility one.

Ubiquinol or ubiquinone for fertility?

Ubiquinol if budget allows. It’s the pre-converted form and produces roughly twice the blood levels at the same dose, with the gap widening after 40. High-dose ubiquinone still works — look for Kaneka on the label either way.

How long before it works?

Three months minimum. Sperm take about 72 days to develop, a follicle around 90 days to mature. Most trials ran three to six months. Start before an IVF cycle, not during one.

CoQ10 for fertility over 40 — what dose?

200–300mg of ubiquinol a day, split across meals — the equivalent of 400–600mg of ubiquinone. The 600mg figure comes from a trial in women under 35 with low ovarian reserve (Xu et al., 2018); nobody has tested it specifically after 40, and ubiquinol is the better pick at this age because conversion declines. Check with your specialist if you are on blood thinners or mid-IVF protocol.

What time of day should I take CoQ10 for fertility?

Any time of day, as long as it is with a meal that contains fat. No trial has tested timing. Split anything above 200mg across two meals, and if it disturbs your sleep, take it earlier.

Can CoQ10 help you get pregnant?

Yes, CoQ10 can support pregnancy by improving egg quality, mitochondrial function, and reducing oxidative stress in the ovaries. These benefits are especially important for:

  • Women over 35

  • Those with low ovarian reserve or poor egg quality

  • Couples undergoing IVF

While CoQ10 does not guarantee pregnancy, it significantly supports better embryo quality and implantation potential.

Which is better, NAC or CoQ10?

Neither is strictly “better”; they serve different purposes:

  • CoQ10: Best for improving egg quality and mitochondrial health, especially in women with low ovarian reserve or older age.

  • NAC: Best for women with PCOS, hormonal imbalances, or oxidative stress, as it improves insulin sensitivity and reduces inflammation.

Can I take CoQ10 and folic acid together?

Yes, CoQ10 and folic acid can be taken together safely. In fact, they complement each other for fertility:

  • CoQ10 supports egg quality.

  • Folic acid is essential for DNA synthesis and preventing neural tube defects.

They can be part of a comprehensive prenatal supplement routine.

What to avoid when taking CoQ10?

When taking CoQ10, consider these points:

  • Avoid taking it with high-fat junk food, as poor-quality fats can reduce its absorption benefits.

  • Be cautious with blood-thinning medications (e.g., warfarin), as CoQ10 may reduce their effectiveness.

  • Avoid skipping doses—consistent use matters for fertility benefits.

  • Take it with meals that contain healthy fats for better absorption.
