Sigrid is a Naturopath at An Apple a Day
Rooted in warmth and a deep belief in the body’s ability to heal, Dr Sigrid helps her patients navigate their health challenges with confidence.
Her unique blend of naturopathic knowledge and real-life experience allows her to support every patient with empathy, clarity, and a truly personalised touch.
What you are today is a culmination of all everything that has happened in the past. What is your story and how did you end up becoming a naturopath in Singapore?
Through my adolescence while living in Malaysia, i had significant chronic skin problems that would not improve. I was treated for years with monthly antibiotics and doctors did not seem to know what else to suggest.
I went to university in Canada and did an undergraduate in biochemistry, thinking i would somehow continue into health sciences. During those years, despite living in a very different climate from Malaysia, my skin issues continued and I started thinking that there must something else to do besides antibiotics to improve my health.
That’s when I discovered naturopathy – I was lucky that in some parts of Canada and the US, there are great naturopathic colleges which is where I was able to pursue my education. I learnt about the pillars of health, how to optimize them and applied this knowledge to my own health.
My skin problems improved dramatically, I did my best to regenerate my microbiome (after years on antibiotics) with the tools I knew and after my studies, started practicing in Canada.
However, I missed Southeast Asia and returned to the region in 2008 where I opened my own practice.
What are 3 things people should know about naturopathy?
- It is a holistic system of medicine that makes us consider pillars of health that need to be tended to and restored to improve chronic health conditions.
- We emphasize correcting micronutrient deficiencies and using herbs and diet to improve health
- We collaborate with conventional doctors as antibiotics and other prescription medications are often necessary to fix acute symptoms while we working on the deeper causes
what do you do for women’s health issues?
I work with lots of women going through IVF – there is a lot coming out of research in terms of IVF support with antioxidants, especially in woman above 35yo and I have found it consistently helpful.
Naturopathic support for PCOS also tends to be very successful if women are motivated to change their diet and exercise patterns.
What advice would you give your 18-year-old self?
I realize now how stressed out I was back then with my studies and about my future – i would tell all stressed out 18yo kids to just relax – there is always a way to move forward and it doesn’t need to be a stressful journey.
What is one thing most people think they know, but you have another take on?
People think we get high cholesterol from eating high cholesterol foods even though that has been de-bunked by science. Our liver is very good at making cholesterol so reducing cholesterol is about changing out diet and exercise patterns – and sometimes even working on stress reduction.
