Healing the Gut

Functional Dyspepsia / Gastritis

Functional dyspepsia is also called non-ulcer stomach pain and is a term for recurring signs and symptoms of indigestion that have no obvious cause. Gastritis is the inflammation of the stomach lining, and is often managed with antacids and PPIs. These two conditions respond very well to acupuncture and Chinese herbs that improve GI barrier function and regulate motility and secretion.

Reflux / GERD

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) occurs when stomach acid frequently flows back up into the esophagus. This acid reflux can result in a chronic cough; in some patients it may trigger a change in the cells lining the lower esophagus, causing Barrett’s esophagus. Acupuncture and Chinese herbs help to turn down the inflammatory cascade while regulating function of the stomach.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common condition that presents as stomach cramps, bloating, diarrhoea and constipation. These tend to come and go over time, and can last for days, weeks or months at a time.

Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) describes a group of disorders in which the intestines become inflamed. This inflammation could be from the body waging a war on pathogens (bacteria, viruses), or waging a war on its own tissues (e.g. Crohn’s and Ulcerative Colitis), then leads to bowel injury.
