If you search melatonin fertility supplement, you’ll find a lot of products that look specially formulated. Most of them aren’t —it’s the same melatonin you’d buy for jet lag. What changes is the dose and when you take it.
So this page covers the practical side: five products compared, which strength to actually buy, and what the research says if you have PCOS. For cycle timing and when to stop, we’ve written that up separately in melatonin for IVF: dose, timing and when to stop.
What Melatonin Does for Fertility
Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland that regulates your sleep-wake cycle. Levels rise as darkness falls and drop with morning light. It’s sold as a sleep supplement, but it’s also a powerful antioxidant, and that second property is why it turns up in fertility protocols.
The research is promising but not settled. What the studies suggest:
For men
- Sperm quality: melatonin may improve motility and reduce DNA fragmentation.
- Testosterone: some research indicates a positive effect in men with fertility problems.
For women
- Egg quality: melatonin’s antioxidant activity may reduce oxidative stress and protect egg DNA. It concentrates in follicular fluid at higher levels than in blood, which is the strongest part of the case.
- IVF outcomes: limited research suggests higher pregnancy rates in women undergoing assisted reproduction for unexplained infertility.
- Cycle regulation, with a caveat: melatonin acts on the hormonal signals behind ovulation, including LH. That cuts both ways — it may help women with irregular cycles or PCOS, but at higher doses it can suppress the LH surge you need to ovulate.
For the mechanism, cycle timing, and when to stop, see melatonin for IVF: dose, timing and when to stop. This page covers which product to buy and how much to take.
Melatonin Dose for Fertility
3mg nightly is the figure to start from. It’s the dose used in most melatonin IVF trials, taken about an hour before bed. Some studies ran 6mg, and fertility clinics prescribe anywhere from 2 to 10mg.
Higher is not better here. Melatonin acts on the hormonal signals that trigger ovulation, so the dose is where the risk sits — this isn’t a supplement where you take extra to be safe.
Two things that matter as much as the number:
- Match the product to the dose. Most of what’s on the shelf is 5mg or 10mg, sold for sleep rather than fertility. If 3mg is your target, a 10mg capsule you can’t split is the wrong purchase. That’s the main reason to read this section before the product list below; product 2 is a 3mg capsule.
- Timing depends on whether you’re doing IVF. In an IVF cycle, melatonin is usually started early — from around day 3 to 5 of the cycle before stimulation — because ovulation is being controlled by drugs anyway. Trying naturally, the picture is different, and taking it through your follicular phase is a real consideration rather than a neutral one. We’ve covered the day-by-day timing in melatonin for IVF: dose, timing and when to stop.
Melatonin also interacts with blood thinners, blood pressure medication, and immunosuppressants. If you’re on any of those, or in an active IVF protocol, confirm the dose with the clinician managing your care before you start.
Best Melatonin Fertility Supplement
The first two products are plain melatonin capsules from well-known brands: Nature’s Bounty at 10mg, a sleep dose, and Now Foods at 3mg, the dose most IVF trials used.
Both are basic, budget-friendly melatonin with nothing added.
Because I consume an entire stack of supplements everyday, I prefer my melatonin (or magnesium) to not be in capsule form.
If 3mg is your target, as the dose section above suggests, the Now Foods is the one to buy.
Prices are shown in Singapore and US dollars. Conversions are approximate, at US$1 ≈ S$1.27 (September 2026). Use the buttons to check the current price.
1. Nature’s Bounty Melatonin 10mg
At about US$0.04 (S$0.06) per mg it’s cheap per milligram. The catch is the strength: 10mg is more than three times the trial dose.
Nature’s Bounty Melatonin Capsules, 10mg
- Pros: Established brand, easy to find.
- Cons: 10mg is a sleep dose. Check the format before ordering — the tablets can be quartered to land near 3mg, but the capsules can’t be split, and opening one to guess a portion doesn’t work.
- Price: US$26.66 (≈S$33.78) for 60 caps
2. Now Foods Melatonin, 3mg
The trial dose in a capsule you don’t have to split. Same brand and vegecap as NOW’s 10mg, but 3mg is what most melatonin IVF trials used, and at S$6.71 for 60 capsules it works out to about S$0.11 a night.
Now Foods Melatonin, 3mg
- Pros: The studied 3mg dose in one capsule, so there’s nothing to split. Plant-based capsule, non-GMO, vegetarian and vegan.
- Cons: Ordered in from iHerb rather than bought off a local shelf. A 60-count bottle lasts two months at one a night.
- Price: S$6.71 (≈US$5.30) for 60 caps, about S$0.11 a night
3. OLLY Melatonin Sleep Gummies
For those like me who don’t like capsules, OLLY is a sugar-free melatonin gummy that is popular supplement with a bunch of raving reviews online.
I prefer the 5mg one, but you can of course decide on less (3mg) or more (10mg).
Besides melatonin, the formula also contains L-theanine, chamomile, passionflower and lemon balm extracts to help calm the body down even more.
Olly Melatonin Gummies with Herbal Blend 5mg
- Pros: No capsule to swallow. Added L-theanine, chamomile, passionflower and lemon balm if you want the calming extras.
- Cons: Several times the cost per mg of the capsules above. The herbal blend hasn’t been studied for fertility — you’re paying for sleep support, not fertility support.
- Price: S$33.49 (≈US$26.43) for 36 gummies
Melatonin Supplements for PCOS
If you have PCOS and you’re trying to conceive, melatonin works on a different part of the problem than most fertility supplements do.
PCOS and bad sleep travel together, and poor sleep worsens insulin resistance — the metabolic problem sitting underneath the condition. That’s the loop melatonin is aimed at.
The trials back that up, modestly. In 72 women with PCOS-related infertility, 3mg daily for six weeks improved sleep a little. A second trial pairing melatonin with magnesium improved both sleep and total testosterone; melatonin alone improved only sleep.
Note what that does and doesn’t say. Nobody has shown melatonin makes you ovulate more, or raises pregnancy rates in PCOS. What it appears to do is ease the sleep and metabolic side of the condition — which is one of the things making conception harder, but not the same as treating the anovulation directly.
One thing rarely mentioned: women with PCOS have been found to have higher melatonin than women without it, correlated with how bad their sleep is. Nobody knows if that’s cause or consequence — but it’s a reason to stick to the studied 3mg rather than reaching for the 10mg bottle. Of the two PCOS-oriented products below, the 5mg Life Extension is the closer fit; the Sleep3 is 10mg and can’t be split.

4. Nature's Bounty Stress Support Melatonin by Sleep3, 10mg
Nature’s Bounty Stress Support Sleep3+ is an option worth exploring because it contains GABA and ashwagandha besides your usual melatonin.
GABA is an inhibitory neurotransmitter naturally produced inside your brain. According to a 2025 study, dysfunctions in the GABA pathway are somewhat linked to infertility in women, especially those with PCOS.
Separately, there is Ashwagandha, which is a well-known adaptogen that calms your nervous system. It is a helpful add-on if your body is more sensitive to stress.
This GABA-Ashwagandha-Melatonin trio may be helpful to calm your system down if you are a stressed-out over-worked Type A person who is also suffering from PCOS.
Nature’s Bounty Stress Support Melatonin by Sleep3, 10mg
- Pros: GABA and ashwagandha alongside the melatonin, in one tablet.
- Cons: 10mg, and this one is sustained-release, so don’t split it — that defeats the timed release. You’re taking the full dose or none. The specific three-ingredient combination has no fertility research behind it.
- Price: S$30.12 (≈US$23.77); S$0.54 per count
5. Life Extension Melatonin 5mg
The other featured product is by Life Extension and includes myo-inositol. I included it here as an option, so you know what is out there. That said, I would choose to use my myo-inositol supplements separately if I were to suffer from PCOS.
Life Extension Melatonin 5mg
- Pros: 5mg, so no splitting needed and it’s within the 2–10mg clinical range. Includes both magnesium and inositol — the PCOS trial that improved testosterone used melatonin with magnesium, and a 2021 study supports melatonin combined with myo-inositol for fertility.
- Cons: Most expensive per mg here. The inositol dose in a combination product is far below what PCOS protocols use — if you want inositol at a therapeutic dose, buy it separately.
- Price: S$26.91 (≈US$21.24) for 60 vege caps
Side Effects of Melatonin for Fertility
Melatonin is generally considered safe for most adults when taken in low doses for short periods. However, potential side effects can include:
- Drowsiness
- Dizziness
- Headaches
- Stomach upset
- Vivid dreams
These side effects are usually mild and temporary. However, individuals with certain health conditions or taking specific medications may experience more pronounced or additional side effects.
Conclusion: Is Melatonin Good for Fertility?
A melatonin fertility supplement is worth taking seriously, but not worth overestimating. The evidence is strongest for egg quality in IVF, decent for sleep in PCOS, and thin for everything else.
Get the dose right — 3mg, not the 10mg on most bottles — and be careful with timing if you’re trying naturally. Beyond that, it’s one piece of a larger picture, and worth discussing with whoever is managing your care.

FAQs
Why is melatonin recommended in IVF?
Mainly for egg quality, and because IVF is the setting where melatonin’s effect on ovulation doesn’t matter — the cycle is drug-controlled. Worth knowing that one large trial found better embryos didn’t translate into higher pregnancy rates.
How does melatonin affect reproductive function?
Two ways. As an antioxidant it protects egg and sperm from free radical damage. Separately, it acts on the neurons that release GnRH, which at higher doses reduces LH and FSH output.
Does melatonin affect female hormones?
Yes. Melatonin can suppress GnRH, which lowers LH and FSH. Irrelevant during IVF, but if you’re trying naturally it means avoiding melatonin on days 1 to 12 — you need that LH surge to ovulate.
What's the best melatonin dose for fertility?
3mg nightly, an hour before bed — the dose used in most IVF trials. Clinics prescribe 2–10mg, but higher isn’t better.
Is melatonin safe while trying to conceive?
Generally, but avoid days 1–12 if trying naturally — high doses can suppress the LH surge. Stop once pregnant.
Melatonin for PCOS — does it help?
Modestly, for sleep. Paired with magnesium it also lowered testosterone in one trial. Nobody has shown it increases ovulation or pregnancy rates.
